Leaves develop dark patches in the summer then wilt and discolour to black. In some instances leaves will be shed early
Dieback of the shoots and leaves can be seen in the summer (UK)
In contrast, new growth can be seen from previously dormant buds located further down the trunk.
Lesions develop where branches meet the trunk. These are often diamond-shaped and dark brown. The inner bark looks brownish-grey under these lesions.
